fyle

A file manager that lives in your terminal.

fyle shows three panes, previews what you point at, and keeps your hands on the keyboard. It is one Python file that needs nothing beyond Python itself, and it runs on any Linux distribution, including Omarchy.

curl -fsSL https://fyle.pages.dev/install.sh | bash

What you get

Previews as you move

Text files, directory contents, archive listings (zip, tar and more), PDF text and a description of any binary.

A real Trash

Deleted files go to the standard freedesktop Trash, so other apps see them too. Browse it, restore with one key, or empty it on purpose.

Do many things at once

Select several files, then copy, cut, paste or trash them. Rename in bulk by editing the names in your own editor.

Tabs, bookmarks and filters

Keep several folders open, jump to saved places, and narrow a long list by typing part of a name or a glob.

Works with your tools

Fuzzy-find with fzf, jump with zoxide, copy paths to the Wayland or X clipboard and open files with your desktop’s default app.

Takes your shell with it

Quit with Q and your shell lands in the folder you were browsing. It also adds a “fyle” entry to your app menu.

Install with one command

  1. 1

Run the installer. It downloads fyle, installs it for your user and adds it to your app menu. It needs only curl, never git, and never asks for root.

    curl -fsSL https://fyle.pages.dev/install.sh | bash
  2. 2

Open a new terminal and start fyle. Use fy instead if you want your shell to follow you when you quit.

    fyle

You need Python 3.8 or newer. No curl? Use wget -qO- https://fyle.pages.dev/install.sh | bash. Want to read the script before running it? Download it with curl -fsSLO https://fyle.pages.dev/install.sh, then run bash install.sh. Run the same command again to upgrade. Icons use a Nerd Font, and Omarchy already includes one. Without it, start fyle with --no-icons. To remove everything the installer added, run curl -fsSL https://fyle.pages.dev/install.sh | bash -s -- --uninstall.
